Join a small but active server, introduce yourself with what you play, reply to people, hang out in voice chat (no mic needed) and show up to events. Add people as friends once you've chatted a few times.
1. Pick a server that's actually active
A server with 50,000 members and nobody talking is worse than one with 3,000 people who chat all day. Before you settle in, check how many people are online and scroll the main chat. If the last messages are from today and different people are talking, it's a good sign.
Smaller active servers are also easier to get noticed in. People start recognising your name after a few days, which rarely happens in a giant server.
2. Introduce yourself properly
"hi" is easy to ignore. Give people something to reply to: what you play, what you're into and when you're usually around.
3. Reply to people, don't just post
Friendships come from conversations, not announcements. Answer questions, ask follow-ups and react to what people share. Remembering someone's name and what they play goes a long way.
4. Get into voice chat, even without a mic
Voice chat is where people really get to know each other. You can sit in a vc, listen and type in its text chat. Most servers are fine with that, and lurkers often end up talking once they're comfortable.
5. Show up to events
Game nights and movie nights are the easiest way in. Everyone's doing the same thing, so there's always something to talk about, and seeing the same faces every week turns strangers into friends.
6. Use roles and channels
Pick the roles for the games and topics you like so you get pinged when people want to play. Spend time in the channels that match your interests.
7. How to add friends on Discord
Once you've chatted a few times, add them. Click their name and choose Add Friend, or go to Friends, click Add Friend and type their username. On mobile, tap their profile and tap Add Friend. Ask first and keep your first DM casual.
8. Be consistent
Friendships take repeated contact. Showing up around the same time a few days a week works better than one long session and then disappearing.
9. Stay safe
- Don't share your address, school, workplace or passwords
- Ignore "free Nitro" links and anyone asking you to log in somewhere
- Block and report anyone who makes you uncomfortable
- Leave servers that don't feel right, there are plenty of good ones
Where to start
pannys is a chill, active Discord server built for exactly this. People chat all day, voice chat runs every night, and there are game nights and movie nights you can drop into on your first day.
