Look at the online count, not the member count. Invite previews and server lists show how many people are online. An active server has messages from the last few minutes, people in voice chat and mods who reply to newcomers.
Why big servers can still be dead
Member counts only go up. People join, leave the server muted forever and never come back. A server with 50,000 members and 200 online can feel emptier than one with 3,000 members and 150 online.
Signs a server is active
- A healthy online count. The invite preview shows how many members are online right now.
- Recent messages in the main chat, from the last few minutes rather than days ago.
- People in voice chat, especially in the evenings.
- Events like game nights and movie nights.
- People reply to newcomers. Say hi and see if anyone answers.
Where to find active Discord servers
- Server lists like Disboard, Discadia and top.gg show online counts and when a server was last bumped. Recently bumped servers usually have people looking after them.
- Discord's Discover tab, for big public communities.
- Communities around a game you play, since shared games keep chats going.

Finding active vc servers
If you want voice chat, check whether people are actually in the voice channels when you join. Servers that call themselves "active vc" should have someone in vc most evenings. No mic? Plenty of servers are fine with you listening and typing.
Give it a few days
Even a great server can be quiet at 6am. Check back at different times, join an event, and talk to people before deciding.
